The modern car is made up of a variety of parts and
components that work together to achieve a final product: the car. These parts
and components are grouped into groups for different tasks. These groups are
referred to as systems. There are many systems that make up the modern vehicle,
working with each other for a larger and sometimes more complex task, while
others work individually to accomplish an individual function. The following is
a list of the main systems that make up the modern vehicle.
- Engine - including lubricating and cooling.
- Fuel system - including evaporation emissions.
- Ignition system
- Electrical system - including starting and charging.
- Exhaust system - including emissions control.
- Train engine - including transmission.
- Suspension and steering systems
- Brake system
- Frame and body
There are many other systems that contribute to the modern
car such as the additional restraint system (seatbelts and air bags), the
climate control system (designed to provide passengers with a comfortable
environment to ride) and the preferred sound system for all.
There have been many changes and developments over the last
100 years, but these nine systems 9 have been integrated into vehicle
development and operation most of the time.
